Telling the story

The next big nature series “The Americas” will premier February 23rd, 2025 on NBC (@nbc) and stream on @peacock. This is a huge series spanning over two continents and I am happy that me and my team @emil_herreraschulz and @yoianbalam have been involved with a bit of filming for it. Together with cinematographer and good friend @erick.higuera we worked on the project in Baja, Mexico. Expect some extraordinary moments from the wild that will make you marvel at the beauty of nature.

As the sun sets, the entire valley is alive with the haunting calls of Trumpeter Swans. These majestic birds found the last open water where they gather before migrating south.
My wife Emil stands nearby, audio recording dish in hand, capturing the incredible sounds of the trumpeter swans. We’re surrounded by a breathtaking Alaskan scene, eagles soaring overhead and swans filling the last ice-free spot in the lake.
It’s a magical evening that reminds us why we do this – to witness and share the raw beauty of the wild. These impressive birds, with their massive wingspans, were once on the brink of extinction. Now, their presence here is a testament to nature’s resilience - that is, if we give it a chance.
As we try to capture this moment, we’re filled with awe and gratitude for the chance to listen to nature’s symphony.

In the winter wonderland of Yellowstone, I found myself crouched in deep snow along the Lamar River. A majestic golden eagle perched above, its keen eyes scanning the open water of the river for unsuspecting ducks. Hours ticked by as I waited, the cold seeping through my layers, but my camera and attention all focused on the bird. Suddenly, the eagle spread its wings and took off, going after a Barrow’s goldeneye swimming below
Everything around me seemed to pause as I captured this breathtaking raptor taking flight. As I lowered my camera, I marveled at nature’s raw beauty and the rewards of patience on the back of my camera screen – but then, where else would you rather be than surrounded by the Yellowstone landscape!

In the stunning new series, Sir David Attenborough explores the world of mammals, uncovering the secrets of their success, from the elusive wolverine to the biggest of them all, the blue whale.

In over 20 years exploring, photographing, and filming wildlife across the wilderness areas of North America I have only seen a wolverine a handful of times. I am very proud and excite to now contribute one of my most memorable moments I filmed a wild wolverine roaming its territory in Alaska in this wonderful new series “Mammals” by the BBC, narrated by David Attenborough. In the episode “COLD” directed by Will Lawson you get a unique glimpse into the life of the wolverine, the solitary wanderer embodying the essence of wilderness.

Wolverines, with their powerful build and thick fur, are adapted to survive in some of the planet’s most inhospitable terrains. They are at home where there is snow for large portions of the year. Known for their incredible strength, agility, and solitary nature, they traverse large territories, always on the move, in search of food. We have reason to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) , one of the most important conservation tools in America! The Act stands as a beacon of hope and environmental stewardship, underscoring our commitment to preserving Earth's biodiversity. Enacted in December 1973, this landmark legislation reflects a collective determination to protect and recover imperiled species and their habitats. The ESA serves as a crucial shield against the growing threat of extinction of many species by providing a legal framework for the conservation of wildlife habitat so that threatened species can recover. The ESA has helped to prevent the disappearance of countless species, amongst them iconic animals such the bald eagle and the humpback whale. In places like the greater Yellowstone ecosystem this legislative cornerstone not only safeguards individual species like the grizzly bear and wolf, but indirectly helps preserve the integrity of entire ecosystems! #wildlife #conservation #wildlifephotography #endangeredspecies #wolf #grizzly #humpbackwhale

During a blizzard I photographed this male polar bear as it was following this female across the sea ice. The bears wove in an out of sight through the curtain of snow. I spend several weeks in a tent in the high arctic with my partner @emil_herreraschulz to document the lives of polar bears. The mating ritual of pusuite and rejection carried on for several days with these two bears. Throughout the nights we had to take turns doing polar bear watch to get some sleep. #naturephotography #polarbear #arctic #adventure #winter #winterwildlife

It was important to give the seal pup and the mother time to adapt to my presence. Wolverines have finally received protection under the Endangered Species Act in the Lower 48 states of the US. Only about 300 animals are believed to still roam the wilderness south of the Canadian border. It therefore is not surprising it is one of the rarest animals to see in the wild, let alone to photograph it.
Only on a handful of occasions have I seen wolverines in the wild. One occasion stands out, particularly in my memory. I was out in Glacier National Park with my friend and amazing writer Douglas Chadwick. He was working on his wonderful book “The Wolverine Way”. In the far distance, we saw a wolverine galloping across the face of a mountain. We were beyond excited to share this observation, only to see a second wolverine follow the tracks of the first minutes later. Every time I have seen a wolverine, they have been on the move – traversing the mountain wilderness with seemingly endless energy. Wolverines are the ultimate wild beasts, legendary wilderness wonders! I am glad they are receiving this protection as their numbers have plummeted over the past decades, due to habitat loss and climate change. To protect wolverines it is essential to keep expanding the network of wildlife corridors across their range to allow them the freedom to roam. #wildlife #wildlifephotography #conservation #wolverine #wildlifeaddicts #endangeredspecies #freedomtoroam #y2y
